The Knysna Art Studio and Gallery is proud to announce the opening of an uplifting exhibition with the local undiscovered talent of Ronald Mitchell. Resident Artist Tarryn Gordon has collaborated with Ronald to celebrate Knysna and South Africa’s progress as we as a nation host the World Cup.
The work in this exhibition is inspired by South African culture, popular culture born form new beginnings, mixed with much loved old traditional elements of the diverse people of this nation. It is a funky Afro Pop style collection of paintings with loads of south African flavor.
South Africa is a country rich in culture, and has been referred to as the ‘rainbow nation’, a title which illuminates the country’s cultural diversity. The population of South Africa is one of the most complex and diverse in the world. Of the estimated 45 million South Africans, nearly 31 million are Black, 5 million White, 3 million Coloured and one million Indian. We have 13 languages and countless religions and traditions.
This very fact has caused us hardship and conflict, but it is also one of the attributes of which we are most proud. A new from of coexistence has been found, I’m not referring to ideas of nationalism or patriotism but devotion based on man’s transcending himself, as this ‘change’ or ‘growth’ of mind set is the one thing that is constant in our lives. We are all, always still learning to live and to love. There is so much purpose and place in passionate and inspired people, and so much passion and inspiration in people with purpose and place. The expression of passionate and inspired art is a product of great purpose and has place in the growth and transcendence of the individual and a global culture.
If human rights and freedoms must be an integral part of any meaningful world order this must be more than just a slogan mocked by half the world, it cannot be expressed in the language of a departing era, and it must not be mere froth floating on the subsiding waters of faith in a purely scientific relationship to the world.
